No picnic facilities are available near the cache except for a
table-top, from which Lake Samsonvale can be seen to the east and
the peak of Mount Samson to the southwest. About 2 good hours
should probably be allowed for the round trip [which includes some
zig-zagging and skirting overgrowth] and all the usual bush walking
tips regarding appropriate dress, drinking water, etc. apply.
I think it's pretty straight forward if not easy going
initially, and map updates can sometimes take quite a while to
catch up with what's actually happening on the ground so I can't
confirm exactly which other local roads provide public access to
the track network.
1. Short version of directions: Check Google Earth, and follow
the plotted/very outdated line of Hipathites Road all the way [As
of 6 April 2008].
2. Long version: When placing the cache I parked at the junction of
Hipathites and Kriesch Roads and walked to WP1 via the track near
letterbox 278. From the phone tower there, it was up an embankment
and straight up the crest of the ridge headed southwest,
passing a private driveway and the corresponding house [and
enclosed dogs] on my right, and a barbed wire fenceline on my left.
Continued up on the same ridge to the fairly overgrown T-junction/s
at WP2 and WP3, and then 100 metres or so roughly northwest to GZ.
The walk back down was to the southeast and
northeast.
