This is a demanding series (five over five star for the final
multi-cache #11) of caches that span most of the Baden Powell Trail
starting at Deep Cove and running westward to the end of the BP
Trail where the new highway is being built.
There is a website that is dedicated to the caches and includes
hints, photos, spoilers and links to the other caches in the
series.
Speedhikers.com
There is also a nice twist to this series because some of the
caches hold hints to a BP Challenge multi cache (GC1BQ6A).
ACCESS STRATEGY
You can access this hike from Cypress Bowel (see cache GCQ5P7
for instruction on how to get to it) and after picking up this
cache continue down the BP trail. This approach is only good in
late Spring till the first snows of the year.) If you want to avoid
snow and travel through some amazing forest scenes then start at
Nelson Creek. This way is around 12 Km in and out so bring lunch
and a good supply of water if you want to make it to the cache. We
ran into deep snow further up the mountain at 800 meters elevation
on April 6th so backtracked down about 1 KM to place the cache in a
no-snow area.
HOW TO GET THERE
Drive to this way-point (N 49 21.742 W 123 15.580) and walk down
the trail on your left. You will see a sign on a gate saying that
this is a watershed area. Pass the sign (like everyone does) and
walk under the highway and up the road to the Trans-Canada-Trail
sign (TCT). Bare right and head up the trail. The road will turn
into a forest path soon enough so keep on going into the deep green
forest. Turn left at this way-point (N 49 22.012 W 123 15.266) and
continue along this very beautiful trail that has just recently
been upgraded by some very creative and talented fence and bridge
teams. Turn left when you hit a TCT junction on the lower part of
the trail and head up towards Whyte Lake. The bridge they are
building has not been completed yet, but it is easy to get across
by jumping on the boulders. When the series of many bridges and
long boardwalk ends you should be at this way-point (N 49 22.534 W
123 15.688) turn right and head up the trail. Just a bit up this
trail there is a orange marker that leeds you to a nice resting
area (N 49 22.590 W 123 15.572). The trail gets a bit sparse here
but can be followed quite easily. After you rest continue up the
trail (pant pant pant) and you will hit The Baden Powell Trail at
this way-point (N 49 22.793 W 123 15.509).
Congratulations you have successfully bypassed the new highway
construction area and Baden Powell Trail is all your again. Start
up the trail and when I say up, it's up... way up... up all the way
to the cache. (note that BP cache #10 is on the way to this cache
so you might want to look for this one as an excuse for a
break).
