Geocache Description:

This is the first of a series of caches depicting roads that were once traveled but now, for varying reasons are not. This series was inspired by the comments of Va Griz and his cache Little Bridge ( GC12345). Sadly Little Bridge has been archived due to graffiti but still available for viewing. Maybe at some point it will again be active. This is posted with his Ok! Thanks Griz. There are at least 5 more of these caches in the planning stages.

A typical chain ferry

This ferry, established around 1888, stood near Shepherd’s Landing. Of unusual design, it used a large chain over a wheel to propel the flat-top, square-ended boat across the river. It carried four or five buggies or one four-horse wagon team. Access routes to this ferry were built over the marshes just above West Point. The ferry stayed in operation until 1916 when a bridge was built across the river at West Point.
If you found this before please note: NEW CONATINER AND  LOCATION!!!!!!  NO bushwhacking necessary and the snake attribute has been removed. You should have no trouble with critters now! New size is Micro but a large micro. This cache is wheel chair accessible.
