Geocache Description:

The cache area is marked by an obelisk-type monument dedicated to forty-six American soldiers who sacrificed their lives in struggling for the Independence of their country, and to Capt. Stephen Stow, who tended to the dying soldiers, and in so doing fell victim to disease himself.

Two hundred American soldiers, suffering from smallpox, and near death, were transferred from a British prison ship, then lying near New York, to a British man-of-war. On January 1, 1777 they were discharged near Milford Harbor in Connecticut. Capt. Stow of Milford voluntarily wrote a will, put his affairs in order, and left his family to tend to these sick and dying soldiers. Despite the efforts of Capt. Stow and other Milford residents, forty-six soldiers died within one month. They were buried in a mass grave near here. Capt. Stow himself contracted smallpox, died, and was buried along with those he served. He had already given four sons to serve in the War of Independence.

The names and residences of the soldiers are inscribed on this monument, which in part states, ". . . Who shall say that Republics are Ungrateful."

At last, my first hide. The cache site is at the edge of Milford Cemetery, with car access from Cherry, Gulf and Prospect Sts. It is a small plastic container with four sealing tabs.

Please avoid the near-by railroad tracks. It is not necessary to go near the tracks to find this cache. It is obviously dangerous to go near the tracks, and if you do, it might arouse unnecessary suspicion from observant train personnel.

Thanks to Janiefind for the container and log book. When we first met, this area was one of our first topics of conversation. Room for small trading items only.

Congratulations to Eyerishangels for FTF! Visit nearby Eyerishangel's Micro #1, a very clever hide.

Happy Hunting!
