La località di Pianvalle si trova a mezza costa sulle pendici orientali del Monte Caprino,nel parco della Spina Verde di Como.
Sono visibili i resti di una parte di un più vasto insediamento proto-urbano (“camere” in roccia, fonti, vie ) che si è sviluppato lungo le pendici meridionali della Spina Verde dal X al II sec. a.C., cioè dalla fase culturale proto-golasecchiana a quella tardo La Tène.
Il periodo di maggior splendore, nei secoli VI e V a.C., è legato all’intensificarsi dei rapporti commerciali tra l’Europa continentale ed il Mediterraneo, in modo particolare con gli Etruschi, come testimoniato dai ricchi corredi rinvenuti nella necropoli della Cà Morta.
Nel corso del IV secolo a.C. il villaggio viene progressivamente abbandonato; con la vittoria dei romani, su una coalizione di insubri e comensi, inizia il lento processo di romanizzazione che porterà alla fondazione di Novum Comum al lago (circa 89 a.C.).
Dalla fine del II al I secolo a.C. Pianvalle diviene un luogo sacro e di sepoltura.
Fin dal 1901 il Dr. Antonio Magni segnalò la presenza di incisioni rupestri.
Nel 1968 una ripulitura del sito, effettuata da alcuni appassionati di archeologia, iniziò a portare alla luce i resti dell’abitato.
Nel 1971 venne effettuato lo scavo, diretto dal Prof. Ferrante Rittatore Vonwiller e dal 1976 al 1979 dalla Prof.ssa Nuccia Negroni Catacchio, autrice delle pubblicazioni sui risultati delle ricerche, per conto dell’Università Statale di Milano, in collaborazione con la Soprintendenza Archeologica della Lombardia e l’ associazione Gruppo Amici città di Como. Dal 1987 il GACom U. Buzzi si occupa del mantenimento del sito stesso.
Lo scavo, esteso su circa 1000 mq., ha interessato due settori :
- il settore A, comprendente la Grande Roccia di Pianvalle con le sue incisioni rupestri ed i resti di strutture sottostanti, relative ad officine per la lavorazione del ferro;
- il settore B comprendente una serie di strutture abitative relative ad una cosiddetta area “residenziale”

Per raggiungere il luogo ci sono diverse possibilita’:
Direzione San Fermo della Battaglia e raggiungere il WP Park1, da qui è possibile continuare per la salita di fronte al parcheggio e arrivare al Park2, ma i posti qui sono limitati. Continuare a piedi seguendo le indicazioni per ‘Il parco Spina verde’ e raggiungere il WP ‘Start1’, l’inizio del sentiero acciottolato.
La salita non è molto impegnativa, se non allenati basta prenderla con calma.
Seguire quindi le indicazioni per ‘Abitato protostorico di Pianvalle’.
Altre due opzioni, più impegnative, che si congiungono sono:
Dal cache ‘Castello Baradello’ scendendo subito dopo aver superato l’abitazione a sin., prendere il sentiero in discesa a destra (vedi cartello indicatore), e seguire le indicazioni per cascine Respaù-S. Fermo della Battaglia.
Raggiunto il Parco delle Rimembranze prendere la stradina acciottolata che proviene da Piazza Camerlata, altro punto di partenza. Arrivati alle cascine Respaù continuare sulla strada pianeggiante sulla sinistra. Adesso prendete fiato perché la ‘strada’ si fa davvero impegnativa. Una salita molto sconnessa e a tratti ‘veramente’ ripida. Sia per la pendenza ed il fondo non sono mai riuscito a completarla tutta (ovviamente in bici).
Seguire le indicazioni per S. Fermo della Battaglia e raggiungere così l’abitato di Pianvalle.
Raggiunto lo STEP1 (vedi foto) ammirate la Grande Roccia.
Alla vostra sinistra quanti tronchi ‘alti’ ci sono? T= n. tronchi. (in alternativa n. sentiero -7)

direction S. Fermo della Battaglia and to catch up the WP Park1, from is possible here to continue for the climb of forehead to the parking and to arrive to the Park2, but the places are here limit to you.
To continue on foot following the indications for ` the Parco Spina Verde' and to catch up the WP ` Start1 ', the beginning of the path cobbled.
The climb is not much difficult, if it does not train enough to take it to you with calm. To follow therefore the indications for ` Abitato protostorico of Pianvalle'.
