I was out driving in the hills today west of Navarre Coulee
in
search of Byrd Point, site of a former Forest Service Lookout
Tower. As I got within 2 miles of the location, I was stopped by
a
deep snow drift. So a cache at Byrd Point will have to wait. On
the
way back down I spotted a road that headed up to a nice vantage
point so I thought I'd check it out. What I discovered there was
a
large boulder that was wedged between two other large boulders,
leaving a peephole underneath. The location offered great views
of
the Columbia River, Chelan Butte, Forest Mountain, and Oklahoma
Gulch. My kind of cache: great views and interesting landscape.
To get here, leave Hiway 97A at N47 45.617 and W120 11.907
and
drive up Oklahoma Gulch for about 4.5 miles to the cache. The
dirt
road is good for any vehicle with clearance. A car could make
it,
but you may need to move some rocks that have tumbled off the
hillside. Four wheel drive is not necessary. Starting elevation
at
the hiway is 750 feet and the elevation at the cache is 3006
feet.
The cache is a short distance from the road (perhaps 0.1 mile).
Enjoy the drive up through the Gulch. We saw several deer
feeding on the hillside. Also saw 2 bluebirds near the cache.
Don't
forget to bring a camera.
