Geocache Description:

A possible round trip of about 2 miles starting either in the village of Scampton or Aisthorpe. Parking is available in both. Good tracks lead to the cache.

This cache will take you close to R.A.F. Scampton, the present home of the Red Arrows. R.A.F. Scampton is an airforce station situated north of Lincoln occupying the site of an old W.W.1 landing field.
During W.W.2 it was the airfield from which the famous Dambusters 617 Squadron took off from to attack the dams of the Ruhr Valley. The operation was know as Chastise and was led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Unfortunately at the time of this raid Guy Gibson's dog, Nigger, was run over and killed just outside the gates of R.A.F Scampton. The grave of his dog can still be seen.
For many years a Lancaster Bomber stood at Scampton gates along with a 'bouncing' and 'grand slam' bomb.In the late 1950's the 'grand slam' bomb had to be moved, but lifting it with a crane was impossible as it was too heavy. This was because it was still packed with LIVE explosives! It is not known how a live bomb came to be on display. It was eventually hauled away and detonated on a test range.
Scampton is also well known for being the home of Vulcan Long Range Bomber during the Cold War of the 1950's and 60's. They were the launch platform of the U.K's. air borne nuclear deterrent carrying Blue Steel missiles.
The main A15 road originally a 2000yr old Roman Road had to be diverted to enable the Vulcans to take off. This diversion is still used but parts of the original, straight Ermine Street remain visible.
Today Scampton is the home of the prestigious Red Arrows Aerobatic Team, where they can be seen practising their skills. R.A.F. Scampton will be used as a location for the remake of the 1954 Dambuster Epic.
