Geocache Description:

A short Multi Cache of a about 400 metres around The Torrs Riverside Park in New Mills.

Unique to New Mills is a 'Park under the town' in the deep sandstone gorge at the confluence of the rivers Goyt and Sett. Central to the town, yet remote from the bustle of traffic and shops, the Torrs Riverside Park offers locals and visitors the opportunity of tranquil scenic walks, under and over many bridges, through a setting of natural and industrial history.

The starting coordinates are for a viewpoint down to Torr Vale Mill. There is an information sign to the RHS. Opposite used to be the New Mills Heritage Centre now sadly closed forever.

Number of the Cotton Mill * 4 =A

The next point is the site of the Rock Mill ruins and view of the Torr Vale Mill opposite which was closed as late as 2000. It is also the start of the spectacular Millenium Walkway which gives fine views to the river below and completed the missing link of the Midshires way.

When was Rock Mill refitted as a printworks=BCDE.

Proceed now to ruins of Torr Mill and the New Community Hydro Power Scheme, which is now (Sep 2008) generating electricity. While here try and find the chimney built in 1846 still standing against the rock face.

When did cotton production finish=FGHI

The final cache is a small lock and lock container located at N 53° 21.A(B+D)E W 002° 00.IE(H-C) . This is muggle country so please be careful retrieving and replacing the cache.

The direct route to the park from the Heritage Centre is down a fairly steep slope and steps. You can get to the bottom without steps by the path by the side of the car park or by taking a circuitous route, with no steps, down the main road and via the Police Station.

For a circular walk you can return to the Town Centre by walking over the Millenium Walkway and up a path that takes you back via the station. Other walks in the area are possible along the Midshires Way or Sett Valley Trail.

You can park in the main town car park which has 2 hours free parking.
