Geocache Description:

Welcome to the 19th. the cache by Team Ladava continuing our historical tour of the Sunbury area.

This cache is located at the site of The Sunbury Pop Festival that ran on the Australia Day long weekend from 1972 to 1975.

From ‘Elevator’ magazine – ‘It’s an era defining image. Billy Thorpe, luxuriantly pony-tailed and mutton-chopped, turkey-necked in sweaty communion with the monolithic 12-bar sludge pouring from the wall of speakers.’ (Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs were one of the loudest bands of the era)

‘The choice of site was integral to Sunbury’s success with a natural grass amphitheatre plus the waters of Jackson’s Creek to leaven the sunburn (and provide those enduring ‘controversial’ images of skinny dipping youths)’ Of course if you wanted decent toilets, food or shelter, forget about it‘

The festival attracted approximately 45,000 music lovers each year, and as the entrance was off Watson’s Road, many who attended travelled to Diggers Rest by train and then walked up Watson’s Road.

Bands over the four events included Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, Max Merritt and the Meteors, Spectrum, Daddy Cool, Johnny O’Keefe, Skyhooks, Kush, Deep Purple, Renee Geyer and Sanctuary, Sherbet and many more. (English band Queen was booed off the stage to screams of ‘go back to pommyland ya poofters’)

A recent addition to the area is a memorial plaque dedicated to the late Billy Thorpe.

NOTE. While Google Maps show Watson’s Road continuing to the area of the cache, in fact it terminates in the vicinity of Crinnion Road. Best access is via Duncan’s Lane

You are looking for a 1 litre container with the usual swaps.

Enjoy
