This is one of a series of caches along the old Abbotsbury branch line. You will need to collect information contained in each log book to find the Abbotsbury Branch Bonus Cache.
The 6 mile branch was opened to traffic on 9th November 1885 by the Abbotsbury Railway Company in association with the Great Western Railway. The line ran westwards from the Dorchester to Weymouth main line at Upwey Junction with intermediate stations at Upwey and Portesham before terminating at Abbotsbury. Stations at Coryates and Friar Waddon were added about 20 years later. Owing to contractor and financial difficulties it took 8 years to build.
Upwey station was conveniently located adjacent to the main Dorchester to Weymouth road. On opening the station was called Broadway. It was renamed Broadwey on 24th June 1896 and, finally, Upwey on 1st January 1913 to avoid confusion with Broadway in Worcestershire.
Unlike other stations on the route Upwey station retained a freight only service until final closure in 1961. It closed to passengers on 1st December 1952.
The original station building and goods shed survives and are used as a shop and offices by a local builders merchant.
Please use extreme stealth when retrieving and replacing the cache and also make sure its tucked safely in its hiding place. Please take care of dogs and children owing to caches location. You will understand when you visit the site (Not so much of a problem evenings and weekends though).
