Lorelei? Lauren? Nope, Laurel! Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Kosh Naranek: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the immediate future, just contact the reviewer who published it (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, they'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

The trip to the cache is upon a well traveled trail behind JPL. The area is a cooler, beautiful, forested canyon. Nearing ground zero you have about fifty feet of stream bed terrain to negotiate. In the dryer months there will likely be a shallow stream crossing. In rainy weather, or under flash flood conditions, Stay Away!

The cache is generally hidden by a stream bank and canyon wall, in a range from where most peoples feet lay, to as high as the top of an average tall persons head.

Traveling up this canyon with my friend and our daughters, we on a mission to replace my recently adopted cache, Pasadena Hunting Club (GC71D0). I thought it would be nice to let our girls help hide, and be the inspiration for a cache. Their cache is an ammo can, well stocked with stuff for kids and kids at heart.

The trail to, and beyond, this cache is actually an old rough road that used to go by the name North Arroyo Boulevard. There is a small bridge, which recently collapsed a short distance into this canyon. For this reason the road/trail is posted closed, yet it still seems as heavily traveled by both biker and hiker, as before. Everyone is just traveling around the fenced off bridge, and rejoining the trail on the other side. Whatever you choose to do here is up to you. It doesn't look like Pasadena is in any rush to remove or replace the bridge, so it could be some time before the trail is "officially" reopened.

Whatever you do, stay off the bridge and use caution when around it. There are plenty of places to cross downstream, and a couple of newly forming trails near the bridge are pretty obvious. If it were not for the signs and chain link around the bridge, you may hardly even notice a problem.

Ground zero is just downstream of a different, still functional bridge. Here is where we first stopped for a snack and to cool off a bit. Our our girls took off their shoes and waded around the stream and sandy banks. We noticed that our daughters shared name characteristics with a tree growing at this location. The common name of this tree is California Bay Laurel (Umbellularia californica) If you don't recognize one of these trees by sight, your nose should quite familiar with the smell of it's crushed (Bay) leaves. It is the biggest tree growing close to ground zero.

Cords may be off somewhat due to poor reception throughout this canyon.

Watch out for poison oak growing in the canyon in general, and ground zero as well.
