Geocache Description:

Four wheel drive required (preferably with low range) by the BLM to drive this BLM Byway to the top and the cache. Hence the 4 terrain rating. Can also be hiked to from Wenden, see below.
None of the "Online" maps listed below show the BLM road up the mountain, here are directions. Look for BLM sign to Harquahala Peak about 8 miles up Eagle Eye Rd toward Aguila, after turnoff of Salome Rd at Mile Post 22

The ammo box cache is near the old Smithsonian Solar Observatory up on Harquahala Peak (5,681'). It is actually located 2/10 mile past the observatory/peak with a view towards Wenden. Can drive past solar array to within about 100' of cache. The view from up there is incredible and the history is also incredible. (visit link)

Bring lunch, water and camera. Allow 5-6 hours from Phx. There are picnic tables and parking near the observatory, but no water. There is a park log book down at the road entrance if you wish to sign (and read) it as well as the one in the cache. Hikers, there is an Arizona State Parks trail to the observatory. The trailhead is near Winden, trail is approx. 5 miles long, and climbs 3,000 feet to the summit. This is how supplies originally got to the observatory in the 1920's. Look up Harquahala Pack Trail here. (visit link)
