Geocache Description:

Oneonta has a long and wonderful affair with trains. We were once home to the largest turntable and roundhouse in the world. Boxcar manufacturing facilities and locomotive repair shops were also housed in the Oneonta yards. The railroads were the largest employers in the area.

This cache is located near an old station that celebrated its 100th birthday in 1999. It was built as a combination passenger/freight station to serve Ulster and Delaware Railroad; it is literally at the end of the line! The U&D ran 108 miles from Kingston to Oneonta, connecting with the Delaware and Hudson Railroad about 200 yards west of the cache location.

Beginning in 1866, milk, bluestone and tourists were transported west from Kingston to the great hotels of the Catskills. By 1899 the line was extended to Oneonta and connection to the “big city” was complete. The first train rolled into Oneonta on July 5th, 1900 with John Rothery at the throttle and consisted of five passenger coaches and two baggage cars.

The line was sold to New York Central in 1932 and continued to operate until 1968. An excursion ride (the Do-Line) continued to operate out of the station until 1972 when construction of Interstate-88 annexed the roadbed. The station was renovated into a restaurant in 1974 and continues to welcome folks to Oneonta, just as it has for more than 100 years!

Railroad lingo: (visit link)

Cache is full of Railroad swag! Container started with wooden train whistles, train conductor duckies, and train stickers! Try to keep train items on the same theme. There is a small FTF prize for the first cacher.

UPDATE: This cache has been active since 2008- the business nearby has new owners and they have moved some things around... I apologize for the smell near the cache location. Those items where not there with the previous owner.
