Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site preserves the remains of a prehistoric Indian city. The central portion of this city was surrounded by a wooden wall or palisade. The wall had a circumference of nearly 2 miles, which enclosed Monks Mound, 16 other mounds and the Grand Plaza. Approximately 20,000 logs, which were 12 to 15 ft. in length and about 10 inches in diameter, were used to build the wall. It had guard towers evenly spaced along its length. The gates to the city were narrow L-shaped openings. The Palisade was constructed between A.D. 1050 to 1150 and was rebuilt three times.
