Geocache Description:

This is a simple Roadside Cache with a view of where Cliftonville, WV used to be located.

CONGRATS WVROOTS FOR FTF ! (33 minutes after publication .. Dang ! That's gotta be some kinda record .. aint it ?)

Old Coal (Cliftonville)

This is a simple Roadside Cache with a view of where Cliftonville, WV used to be located. Standing near the Cache, on the road, and looking south across the creek & across the tracks you will see a large cove surrounded by a large curving mountain .. this was/is the location of Cliftonville. Park just down the road by the WMA Gate at
N40 17.944' W080 32.057'
The WMA Gate was the actual road entrance into Cliftonville. If you park there & walk over by the creek you will see an old concrete structure and on the opposite creek bank .. another same structure. Just to the left of the structure on the opposite bank you can see where they reinforced the creek rock ledges to use as a bridge abutment.
Cliftonville is what was known as a "Coal Patch Town" ... and it no longer exists. Mother Nature & Strip Mining in the 60's has wiped out some of the area .. but a few cool historic things still remain. Most of the young people in this area have never heard of Cliftonville .. and those who have, don't have a clue as to where it was located. I have explored this area for several years and have probably logged over 30 miles looking for relics and things of interest.
I can't really place a cache in Cliftonville because of WV WMA policy of not allowing geocaches. Cliftonville was the scene of a major Mine War .. or Riot .. back in 1922. This Mine Riot resulted in the Brooke County Sheriff losing his life ! This was the only Brooke County Sheriff to ever lose his life in the line of duty. The Brooke Geneology Site has some cool history on this town/area also ! (visit link)
I placed an old picture of the Tipple Fire in this cache ... it seems to have been taken from the very spot you are standing. Please leave this picture in the cache so the next finder can see it. We hope you enjoy this little "Roadside Cache" .. it's not a micro in a guardrail .. but it's close .. It's an ammo box in the weeds.
There is no need to get near the Creek/Cliff ... the Cache is placed in a safe to access spot.
At placement, this cache contains a FTF Prize, a piece of Cliftonville Coal, some assorted McCrap and a "Snake River FL Red Jeep TB".
