Geocache Description:

Split Rock is a Resort and Spa for Travel Bugs and Geocoins.

Bring your weary travel bugs and geocoins to the Split Rock Lighthouse Travel Bug and Geocoin Resort and Spa for some rest and relaxation before starting out again on their travels. Stay at the resort and luxuriate in the newest spa treatments, visit the nearby spiritual retreat center featuring three different churches, or stroll in the nearby park. The park, which is just across the street, also features equipment for the entertainment of the younger set. About 100 feet from the front door, numerous gleaming white, 48 foot limousines stream by carrying the rich and famous as well as the not so rich and famous to destinations all over the Twin Cities. The Mall of America and Downtown Minneapolis are just two of the many popular destinations for these limousines. The drivers are great and the rates are really reasonable.

The grand opening of the Split Rock Lighthouse Travel Bug and Geocoin Resort and Spa was on May 11, 2008 to commemorate the Sesquicentennial of the state of Minnesota (150 years of statehood), Mothers Day, and the Opening of fishing season in the state (a Minnesota Trifecta so to speak). This Travel Bug and Geocoin Resort and Spa is also named after a famous place in Minnesota. Don't get confused.

The actual Split Rock Lighthouse is a Minnesota landmark located just south of Silver Bay, Minnesota, USA on the North Shore of Lake Superior (about 200 miles north of this geocache--see GC1B87B at N 47° 11.959 W 091° 22.777). It is very interesting to see and well worth a visit. Interesting and informative tours are available throughout the summer months and at other times of the year. The structure was designed by lighthouse engineer Ralph Russell Tinkham and was completed in 1910 by the United States Lighthouse Service at a cost of $75,000, including the buildings and the land. It is built on a 130-foot (40 m) sheer cliff of anorthosite. Now the light is lit about once per month. The light is always lit on November 10 to commemorate the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald, the last wreck where lives were lost on Lake Superior. The lighthouse was first lit on July 31, 1910. It was built in response to the loss of ships during the famous Mataafa Storm of 1905, in which 29 ships were lost on Lake Superior. The light was retired in 1969 by the U. S. Coast Guard. The lighthouse is now part of the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and is operated by the Minnesota Historical Society. The site includes the original tower and lens, the fog signal building, the oil house, and the three keepers' houses. It is restored to appear as it did in the late 1920s. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. If you are interested in more history or pictures see (visit link) This is also the site of a state of Minnesota State Park.

Staff:
Bumble Bee, Keeper will host your stay. Bumble Bee is also the light house keeper (hence the title). Bee knows bugs and will attend to their needs during their stay. Bee is a hard worker and can be seen buzzing all around the Resort. More than likely you will see Bee on the concierge level when you visit Split Rock Lighthouse Travel Bug and Geocoin Resort and Spa.

Bring your travel bugs and geocoins by for some rest and relaxation. We specialize in 5000 mile checkups. Come on in anytime...we'll leave the light on for you!

Keep on caching.
