Haystack Mountain, 2428 ft
We placed this cache on Mother's Day, 2008 as a way to encourage moms and families to come out for a short 1 mile round trip hike with commanding views of the Chatanika River Valley, the backside of Murphy Dome, and the Poker Flats Research Station.
We have heard about Haystack Mountain for years but this was the first time we took the turn right after the Chatanika bridge to see things for ourselves. We parked at N 65 07.676 W 147 38.102 on the side of the road and used a 4 wheeler trail to access the rock formations. Please be aware that private property is nearby. This hike is quite suitable for all ages due to the shortness and good dirt trail.
