this cache replaces the original "pine hill preserve" cache that was archived at the request of island heritage trust. this new cache has been placed, in a different location, with permission from iht.
i am using the same cache description; however, the container has been changed to a bison tube and i have increased the terrain rating. this is a steep climb - please use caution!
these coordinates will bring you very close to the cache.
pine hill preserve was donated to the island heritage trust in 2006 by kurt and pat fairchild, "to save this island treasure for everyone."
i remember coming here when i was a small child with my uncle and cousins, but it was long enough ago so i don't remember the climb!
pine hill preserve is located at fire road 917 on little deer isle. there is a chain across the road but it is a short walk.
please note that the rocks are slippery and treacherous when wet or icy. there is a sign at the beginning of the trail stating, "rock climbing on quarry face not recommended. rock unstable and loose." please use caution. stay on the trail and walk on the rocks when possible.
if you come here on a clear day, the view is awesome. there are views of the deer isle-sedgwick bridge and the deer isle causeway that most people never get to see.
pine hill, before the chain went up across the road, was quite a hangout. i am so glad that the island heritage trust will now oversee this beautiful place.
