New Brunswick Geographic Information Corporation HIGH PRECISION PILLAR. 4m acc when placed. Log sheet only, bring your own stick.
This is taken directly from a sign at coordinates N45 55.997 W066 39.460.
Serves as a reference point. Orbiting around the world at 20,000 km a constellation of 24 Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) is continually broadcasting radio frequencies signals. By attaching a GPS receiver to this pillar it will collect and process data from these signals and will help determine the pillar’s location on earth. The receiver will generate a latitude and longitude for the pillar. In relationship to the position of this pillar, surveyors and others will determine the relative positions of other points, like buildings, property corners, vehicles, etc…with an achievable linear accuracy of millimetres.
Forms part of a network. This pillar is part of a provincial terrestrial network of 25 permanent pillars distributed throughout New Brunswick. This network is also related to a national reference system called the Canadian Spatial Reference System (CSRS). Using GPS as a tool, your present location can be determine with respect to other know pillars or structures in Canada or around the world.
