Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the Okaman Elk Farm. The coordinates listed will take you to the 1st stage of the cache. You will find the second caches coordinates on the log book. Bring a pencil to sign log.

"Imagine the year is 1855... You would be standing in the busy town of Okaman. The name "Okaman" an Indian word means 'a resting place for herons.' Situated between Lake Elysian to the west and Lily Lake to the N.E. of the farm, the town was home to early settlers. It featured several hotels, a theatre, and the Buckout Flour Mill. Located on the N.W. corner of Lake Elysian the mill attracted farmers from a wide area who brought their grain to ground into flour.
The Okaman school stood near where our flag pole is located. At the east end our driveway the Historic Seha Sorghum Mill still stands. Built in 1895, Sorghum syrup was produced and sold here until 1953. Wagon loads of cane were unloaded up the hill where it was crushed and flowed into steam heated cookers inside the mill. (We) The Kaplans bought this unique farm from the Sehas in 1991 and began the long conversion process for raising elk.
Care has been taken to restore wherever possible...blending old with new. The original homestead was built in 1893. Refurbished in 2000, it serves as the sales office for our Elk operation.

We hope your experience at Okaman is both educational and enjoyable!

-Don and Joyce Kaplan and Family"

The farm also has a petting zoo and a cute gift shop to browse in if you choose. The owners of the Elk farm, The Kaplans hope you enjoy visiting, but please daylight hours only. Say "hi" to Lola the pot-bellied pig, as she often likes to sun herself by the gift shop on sunny days!!! If you see someone out working on the farm feel free to stop and chat! Don and his family would love to tell you more about what they do... But, we did not tell Don where cache #2 is... Although, he might have a general direction :)
