Geocache Description:

SMILEY'S FALLS....Seriously, think about it, could there possible be a place with a better name for geocaching???

When I read the the Fayetteville Observer this week that the Town of Erwin established a new park with a walking trail along the Cape Fear River at a place called Smiley's Falls, I had to check it out.

First, of course, a bit of history: The large rock you see in the river here essentially ends the navigable part of the Cape Fear River. (A major reason why the town of Fayetteville is where it is located.) Over the years, various methods have been used to destroy this obstacle to shipping, including dynamite, to no avail. The rapids you see surrounding the large rock are all that are left of a series of locks built in the 1850's to allow boats to bypass this obstacle in the river. A couple of hurricanes, the Civil War, and ultimately the railroad finally finished the locks.

The park that recently opened is phase one of a larger project. Presently, ours is the only cache in the park, although we can DEFINITELY see the potential for many more. The present trail is 0.44 miles long with nice river overlooks spaced roughly 0.1 miles apart (note to future cache-placers: hint, hint, wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

(Another note to future cache-placers: There are plenty of trees and rocks here big enough to hide an ammo can - like this cache - or some tupperware. There's nothing wrong with a little swag now and then, micro caches are for CITIES!!)
