Geocache Description:

Cache is a white plastic tub with a snap lid containing a log book. Please bring your own pencil / pen. The cache is big enough for small Travel bugs and Geocoins. The cache is set away from, but in view of the Hill of Barra.

The Fort is not so much a ruin as a site and dates back to around the Iron age. It also has signs of mediaeval ridge and furrow cultivation. Apparantly it is also known as Comyn's camp because of a legend that the forces of the Earl of Buchan (John Comyn) spent the night there prior to their defeat by King Robert I on the 23rd May 1308. If visiting the fort it is possible to do this via a trail to the north (Oldmeldrum side), but parking options are limited. Turn off at the mini roundabout opposite the Oldmeldrum bypass. If you plan to bag the cache you would be better to approach from the southside. The trail starts at the Kirkton of Bourtie and the cache is placed a short distance along this 'Meldrum and Bourtie community walk'. From the cache site there is great open views, Inverurie to the left, Bennachie in the center and the Hill of Barra to the right. Again it is possible to continue along the trail to the fort site approx - 500m away. There are however a few stiles to negotiate. If you contemplate going it might not be suitable for dogs?
