Geocache Description:

Old Mountain Road was the road access from the port of Raglan to the Waikato and the rest of North Island in the 1940’s, and with the serious concern about possible Japanese landings, something had to be done to keep an invading force at bay.

In 1942, this type E anti-tank block was constructed in a narrow part of the road, one of 500 tank traps built in the Northern Military District. Few, if any others remain, however the opening of the new Raglan-Hamilton road shortly after, left this remarkable piece of our military history on an obscure back-road so it could remain.

The construction includes slots that retain heavy logs and rail irons, which would effectively close off road access completely.

If you are coming from Hamilton, there is a good wide turning area 1km past the trap (if you're coming the other way you can turn 700m up the road).

Squeekybobo, a long-time Waikato cacher placed a cache here in 2004, but archived it when he moved to Northland. This piece of history deserves recognition, so a new cache is in place to bring you to view this iconic piece of history.

The cache is a 2 litre sistema, painted camo, and you will need to scrabble up the bank a little to reach the secure hiding spot..
