Geocache Description:

A short walk to view the Boyndie Windfarm Turbines and some of the remains of RAF Banff Airfield a site which has been associated with “Air Power” for over 60 years.

Parking is available at the Boyndie Visitor Centre (http://www.boyndievisitorcentre.co.uk/)(N57 39.753 W002 36.336) which also houses a display related to the airfield.

The R.A.F. Coastal Command, Banff Strike Wing at RAF Banff (visit link) known locally as Boyndie, operated between September 1944 and May 1945, occasionally along with the Dallachy Strike Wing from nearby Fochabers.

The mixed Mosquito and Beaufighter units of the Banff wing under the command of Group Captain the Hon. Max Aitken DSO, DFC mounted concentrated attacks on German surface vessels and U-boats in the North Sea and along the Norwegian coast. Their success in the closing months of World War II was significant in the defeat of Germany and strike wing aircraft operating from the aerodrome inflicted heavy damage on enemy shipping and supply routes. Many thousands of tons of vital iron ore and other supplies were lost to the German forces as a result of rocket and cannon attacks carried out by this gallant strike wing. Losses amongst R.A.F. commonwealth and Norwegian squadrons were high. More than one hundred aircrew gave their lives flying with the R.A.F. Banff Strike Wing.

(For more detail, the activities of the station have been researched and recorded in: A Separate Little War: The Banff Coastal Command Strike Wing Versus the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe 1944-1945 by Andrew D. Bird.)

More recently seven wind turbines have been constructed to create the Boyndie Windfarm. (visit link)

Work on the Boyndie wind farm started in June 2005. The 2 Megawatt Enercon turbines should generate energy to supply around 8,500 homes and stand at a height of 100m to tip. Each of the seven turbines has a hub height of 65 metres, rotor diameter 71m and the rotor speed of up to 21.5rpm.

With not much of a fanfare an eighth turbine was constructed and installed with initial build being completed in December 2009. We are up to nine turbines now, you might almost think they are breeding!?

With even less of a fanfare there are now 9!
