Geocache Description:

Situated in the village of Ruyton Xi Towns.

The terrain difficulty reflects a small grassy bank you have to negotiate on your way to the final cache location. All other terrain is easy walking and suitable for children, although please be careful on the road next to the church, which can be busy at times.

The coordinates given above are for parking and the first clue, and not for the cache location itself.

Ruyton XI Towns is the only place in the world with Roman numerals in its name! In 1308, the Earl of Arundel, created the new Borough of Ruyton, within the manor of the eleven townships. All eleven towns still exist but some no more than one or two houses. In 1886 the borough status was rescinded the name of Ruyton XI Towns was retained.

In recent years the village has expanded and the present population is approximately 1,360.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle:

Most famous for being the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle lived for a while in Ruyton XI Towns, where there is evidence to suggest he may have found the inspiration behind the famous detective's name.

With this history in mind, we thought it would be fitting to set a short cache with eleven clues to solve!

Don’t despair, each of the clues are set in close proximity to one another, not too much walking is needed and they should be solved within 10 minutes or so, depending on your Sherlock Holmes detective skills!

The final cache is located a short walk away from the church.

The trail starts at the parking coordinates – good luck!

The XI Clues
1) If Dr Watson was going to ring Sherlock here, what number should he call?
2) Walk down towards the church, but don’t cross the road yet. In what year was this shelter provided by the Parish Council?
3) Now cross the road and walk around the church following signs to the castle. Looking towards the The Admiral Benbow, how old was Robert Coope when he fell asleep?
4) How many of the castle walls are still standing? (large lumps of rock)
5) On the church front door, how many empty door nails are there?
6) Turn around and walk to the gate directly behind you, looking at the road below. What speed should you be traveling?
7) How many spears are on the metal fence next to the gate?
8) How many spears of the same type are on the top row of the gate next to the fence?
9) Back to the church – how many clock faces are on the church?
10) Now walk to the back of the church to N52 47.631 W002 53.918. Have a seat here, and look behind your right shoulder. When date in the month February 1936 did the Bishop of Stafford open the churchyard?
11) Now for the final clue! Hope you have paid attention to the history of Ruyton Xi Towns in the cache description. How many places in the world have Roman numerals in its name?
