Geocache Description:

This is the 3rd in a series of 6 caches in Woodland and pasture.

This is the 3rd in a series of caches forming a 5 mile circular route based around the GAIT BARROWS National Nature Reserve. We recommend they be done in a clockwise direction, but they could all be done as individual caches. Ample parking for 3 cars may be found at the start point at N54. 11.309 W002. 48.256.

The reserve contains a wide variety of rich wildlife habitats, from spectacular limestone pavements with their unique range of wild flowers including the rare angular Solomon’s Seal, to the tranquillity of Haweswater where Bitterns and Water Rails skulk amongst the reedbeds.

Much of the Woodland is managed as coppice, where rare brown fritillary and pearl-bordered fritillary butterflies thrive. You may be fortunate in Spring to see examples of the first of the butterflies, the yellow brimstone. The limestone grasslands are rich in insect life, while the cattle grazed pastures provide a lush, flower rich landscape through the Spring and Summer. We hope you enjoy your visit. Please look after the site by following The Countryside Code and by not disturbing wildlife.

After leaving the road South of Hazleslack Tower Farm take the Bridleway signposted Rollywood Lane. Follow the green lane to the first signpost to Leighton Beck Bridge, heading SSE across the fild to the bridge over the stream on the Cumbria/ Lancashire boundary
(See Waypoint N 54. 11.844-- W002.47.908) Head SE alongside Leighton Beck then pass through 3 gates/stiles to reach the cache location where a medium sized snap top plastic box is hidden.

There may be young cows in the field but at the time of putting this cache on they were just curious although we cannot guarantee they'll stay just curious.!!!!! We know they grow rapidly, upwards and outwards.
Carry on Eastwards onto the pathway to the Main Road.
TAKE CARE ON THIS VERY SHORT SECTION OF ROADWAY. Walk SE for 60m / yds to a singposted pathway to the South, and on to the next in the Series.... GAIT BARROWS..THE AVENUE.
