Geocache Description:

Our apologies for bringing you to this Industrial Estate in Bridgend but there is a link.

The cache is a simple "cache and dash" Multi located near to a former Callard and Bowser confectionery factory, which formerly made ALTOIDS.

Why reprised? This cache replaces an earlier cache on the same theme that was located nearby - until it was wiped out by a motorist that misjudged a sharp bend!

Anyone who has done any urban caching in the USA will know that ALTOIDS tins are the ubiquitously used as micro cache containers in the USA as they more readily lend themselves to use as a magnetic cache than 35mm film canisters, which are more commonly used in the UK. The cache container follows that theme. Bring a pen or pencil as there is not one in the cache - yet!

The coordinates are for the factory and the cache is located within 0.5 miles of this location. The actual cache is located at N 51 30.ABC W 003 31.DEF where:

A = The number of Tins of Altoids currently being produced by this factory!
B = The number of letters in the flavour of the Altoid Tin sign in the left + (the number letters in the flavour middle minus the number of letters in the flavour on the right)
C = The number of letters in the first name on the front of the factory
D = The number of Altoid Tin signs on the front of the factory + (the number letters in the flavour on the right minus the number of letters in the second name on the front of the factory)
E = The number of letters in the first name on the front of the factory
F = The number of Altoid Tin signs on the front of the factory + (the number of letters in the flavour on the right minus the number of letters in the flavour on the left).

Note: The Flavours are not plural!

Directions are as you are facing the factory.

ALTOIDS, the Original Celebrated Curiously Strong Mints, were first produced in England at the turn of the 19th century during the reign of King George III. Smith & Co. (Est. 1780), the small London firm that developed the original “curiously strong” recipe, later became part of Callard & Bowser, a prestigious English confectioner founded in 1837.

ALTOIDS Peppermints are specially formulated peppermint lozenges many times stronger than ordinary mints. Their curious strength came from the use of real peppermint oil, as prescribed in the original recipe developed by Smith & Co. at the turn of the 19th centaury.

Today all ALTOIDS varieties including Peppermint, Wintergreen, Spearmint, Liquorice and Ginger are made to the same standards as the original ALTOIDS recipe developed more than 200 years ago – just not here any longer!

The factory by which this cache is placed used to make ALTOIDS and other confectionery until it was purchased by Wrigley’s (of chewing gum fame). Within 12 months the manufacture of ALTOIDS at this site had ceased and production was moved to the USA.
