Close to the
Barbican
The cache is a small tab-lock box, and is hidden close to the
Barbican Gate in Antrim. The best parking place is in the car park
at Antrim Forum, it is only a short walk from there. Once you find
the cache, take the time to walk a little further, cross the metal
footbridge, and then double back on the far side of the river from
the cache to have a look at the gate.
The Barbican Gate was built in 1818, and was the main entrance
to Antrim Castle. It has recently been restored and is a B1 listed
building. It has battlements and neo-Tudor twin towers framing a
great Tudor arch.
The gatekeeper would have lived above the archway, and he would
have opened and closed the wooden doors for guests.
The crests of the Massereene and Ferrard families can be seen
above the gate.
GPS signal is poor at the cache site, so in case you have a
problem, an extra clue is as follows: With your back to the metal
footbridge, stand on the path between the two sturdy oaks, walk
past the lamp on your left for a further three paces, then turn
left.
Another cache,"Castle
Gardens" GCJAQV, is close by.
