Geocache Description:

Located in New Cumberland WV

This cache is located on the grounds of the Hancock Co. Historical Museum. The building was built in 1887 for Oliver Sheridan Marshall and his family. His wife died before the house was completed, so the third floor rooms were never finished, since they were used for entertaining. The names of their two children are etched in the transoms above the bedroom doors. Mr. Marshall was an attorney whose office was located in his home. He also was elected to the WV State Senate, serving for twelve years and one term as President of that Senate. Having remarried, he and his second wife had other children one of whom became a teacher. She continued living in the home until her death at age 93. The home had been family occupied until 1995. The Historical Society purchased the building in 2000 from the McNeil family, only the second family to own it. The house had been built from lumber from his family farm in such a manner so that each room has a view of the Ohio River below. The Museum is open Sunday 12 noon -3 P.M. during June, July, August. Tours at other times can be scheduled by appointment. Send an email to the Owner of this cache for contact phone number.
New Cumberland originally was named Cuppy Town after the person who settled the town. Settlement was for the purpose of using the clay deposits of the area for manufacturing bricks Among the Riverboat Captains who piloted their boats on the river, the area was known as “Brickyard Bend” They identified it by the bend in the Ohio River and being able to see all of the Brickyards in the town.
