Geocache Description:

Located in Steubenville OH

Cache is located at the Historic Fort Steuben in Steubenville OH. In 1785 the Continental Congress determined that the area known as the Northwest Territory be surveyed and sold as public lands to raise money for the fledgling nation which had neither the power to tax nor any other means to raise funds. In 1786 the First American Regiment was sent to build a fort to protect the surveyors from the attacks by the local Shawnee and Delaware Indians who were hostile to the advances of the white men. Fort Steuben helped in the opening of the territory which became the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

The town that followed took its name from this fort. The non-profit organization that worked to rebuild the fort also developed the surrounding block into Fort Steuben Park that includes the Veterans Memorial Fountain and the Berkman Amphitheater. The Fort Steuben Visitors center is home to the Museum Shop and the Steubenville Convention & Visitors Bureau and is an official site on the Ohio River Scenic Byway. The Fort is open from May through October. Hours are Monday to Saturday, from 10 am to 5 pm., Sunday 11 am to 4 pm. The Visitors Center with Museum Shop and Exhibits remains open year round, Monday through Friday, 10-4 pm.
