We're placing this cache to remind us of our alma mater, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. we are US expats who love the Carolina Tarheels!!

As the first state university in the USA, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was chartered in 1789 and opened to students in 1795. Carolina was the only public university to award degrees to students in the 18th century. The undergraduate program has ranked in the top 30 programs in the USA by the US News and World Report and is consistently among the top 5 public universities with UC Berkeley, Univ of Virginia, UCLA and Univ of Michigan.

Tar Heel is the nickname applied to North Carolina and its people as well as the UNC Chapel Hill sport teams. UNC is well known for its' men's and women's basketball, women's soccer, men's lacrosse, men's baseball, football and track and field.

The exact etymology of the nickname Tar Heel is not known but most experts believe its roots come from the fact that tar, pitch and turpetine created from vast pine forests in North Carolina were some of its' most important early exports. Some believe it to be a nickname given during the US Civil War, due to the state's importance on the Confederate side. "The North Carolina's troops stuck to their ranks like they had tar on their heels," you will hear some Southerners say.

In 1924, one of the UNC cheerleaders decided that Carolina needed a mascot to break the football team's slump so a ram (Rameses I) was bought from Texas for $25 and it debuted at the UNC vs VMI football game on 8 November 1924 which UNC won. there has been a long line of Rameses since then.

When the cache was 1st placed, it contained Tar Heel stickers, 2 Tar Heel magnets, a UNC jibbitz (for crocs), barrel of slime, pirate eye patch, small mask, penguin toy, scooby toy and girls ring and press on earrings.

Go Heels!!!
