Geocache Description:

BLACK LOUGH
Suggested parking at N54 29 636
W006 46 814

The Black Lough, or Ballysaggart Lough, in Dungannon is part of the system of lakes and waterways that were built to feed the Moygashel mills.

It is not known where the Black Lough, or Ballysaggart Lough, actually gets its name, but Ballysaggart is known as the townland of the priests. Towards the north of the lough was the place where the monks lived.

It is a tremendous place to watch birds and the lough has been described as one of Dungannon’s best kept secrets, known mainly to birdwatchers. On a nearby crannog there are Tufted Ducks & Cormorants which come in from Lough Neagh. You can also see Mallard, Golden-Eye and Widgeon here & Teal, not to mention the unusual “Ruddy Duck”.

The lough is also an important site because of its diverse fen flora. The open water of the lake contains floating aquatic plants such as Yellow Water-lily (Nuphar lutea) and Broad-leaved Pondweed (Potamgeton natans). The lake is surrounded by a band of swamp which supports a range of wetland plants including Water Horsetail (Equisetium fluviatile), Bottle Sedge (Carex rostrata) and Bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliataI).

The lough is a favourite walk for local people where they come to feed swans and ducks so please remember, if you can, to bring some bread.

THE CACHE

The cache is a medium size tablock container, camouflaged and with geocaching sticker. When placed it contained a log book, pencil, sharpener, FTF badge and usual swap items.

Please use utmost vigilance when retrieving and replacing the cache. It is placed near a seat where you can write your log and maybe sit a while to enjoy the birdlife.

It is safer to park at the suggested parking co-ordinates than risk leaving your car at the side of the road. There is a proper pathway along the lough to the cache. Where it is suitable for wheelchair users to access the path, the cache could not be retrieved from a wheelchair.

Please take care with young children near water.
