Crossing the lake is the most difficult part of the terrain. The cache is well hidden. the distance from shore depends on where you land on the island. The SW point would be the closest.
“Unlodged” is placed on the grounds of the former Star Island Lodge. The Lodge included a rustic building and housekeeping cabins built by a Twin Cities group in 1922 and 1923. The day it opened, a dance was held. The Lodge continued to be a place for vacationers and a gathering spot for residents of the Island. Young people often gathered there for card games, ping pong, and to meet before boating. Children enjoyed ice cream, candy, pop and other treats purchased at the Lodge. Initially, the Lodge was also the only place from which islanders could make a phone call. In those days, most news arrived by boat.
However, the Lodge never prospered. It struggled in the years post 1950 and was purchased by the US Forest Service about 1970. Between 1970 and 1972, the lodge was dismantled into two pieces and transported across the ice. A private party purchased ½ the lodge for use as a cabin on Steamboat Lake. The US Forest Service now operates a campground on this site. Two fireplaces and some of an old foundation remain.
