The Coginchaug River begins at Myer Huber Pond and flows with low
volume through over 3 miles of difficult swamps. Paddling this
stretch should only be attempted after heavy rains. The main
paddling route starts at Route 147 and continues downstream, north,
through some more slow moving waters and a swamp. The river route
has many portages while encountering six dams and one major
waterfall, Wadsworth Falls. There is potential for Class II
whitewater before the Coginchaug flows into the tidal marsh of the
Mattabesett River.
I have wanted to place a cache here for two years and I finally
found the excuse to come out here on a beautiful day and do so. My
paddling partner and I encountered many people and much wildlife
when placing this cache. I hope you enjoy finding it.
My suggestion is to put in at Mattabesset River Canoe/Kayak
Trail and to exit at Harbor Park / MRCKT end so
that you can grab three caches. Or, you can just paddle upstream
from Harbor Park without too much difficulty.
