Geocache Description:

A traditional cache located on a well defined public footpath. Please note there is no legitimate vehicle access, so do not take cars, and respect the farm land that the footpath crosses.

The cache is named after Oakbutts Farm, which was occupied in 1890 by William Horner, Farmer according to the entry in the Bulmer's Directory of 1890 for the Post Office, professions and trades for HUNTINGTON .
It described the TOWTHORPE TOWNSHIP as containing 1,074 acres extends into the parish and manor of Strensall. Its rateable value (in 1890) is £1,002, and the number of inhabitants 49. Riley Briggs, Esq., of Osgodby Hall, near Selby, is lord of the manor, and owner of the whole township, except 350 acres of common, which was purchased eleven years ago by the Crown for the use of Strensall Camp. The soil is light sand with a little clay. The village stands on the east bank of the river Foss 4½ miles N.N.E. of York, and about one mile from Strensall Station.

This cache can be approached from one of two directions.

The first way is to find the footpath that leads off from the road from Haxby to Strensall (N54.02.201 W001.03.024). Staring in Haxby and following Usher Lane or Crossmoor Lane and following signs to Strensall to get you going on the right road. There is no parking close to the start of the footpath but the cache is nearer to this end and you don't have to cross the railway line.

The second is from the public footpath that begins on the Towthorpe Road. Travelling from Haxby to Towthorpe you will come across a sharp right hand bend. It is possible to park a car here (N54.01.541 W001.03.380). The public footpath runs NNW from this point and passes Oakbutts Farm. You will have to cross the railway line through the gates. Obviously you should take care at this point but the rules for crossing are clearly marked, and if you have children or pets with you bear in mind your responsibility when crossing an open railway line. The railway is the York to Scarborough line and trains pass about once every half hour, in Summer there are times when a steam train goes on this track.

The cache is a 1.5ltr lock and seal.
