Geocache Description:

Camouflaged matchsafe. Log only – bring a pen. This one should be a quick find with parking just a few yards away. St. John’s-in-the-Prairie Episcopal Church in Forkland, Alabama. A gorgeous little wooden Carpenter Gothic country church, designed by Richard Upjohn, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A similar Upjohn-designed church in Gallion, Alabama has a cache too (GC1C9JW). There's a small cemetery behind the church, though the cache is not near any graves. If you cache here on a full moon night, be prepared for a Scooby Doo moment or two; Carpenter Gothic church + old cemetery = spooky looking at night! Have you ever seen a church with a pulpit in a tree stand? This one has just that. I wonder how the “Sermon on the Cedar Tree” goes… Hopefully it doesn’t go on too long, since there is an active hive of bees living just below the pulpit! From the Historical Marker: Organized "in the Prairie" south of Greensboro in 1834 by the Rev. Caleb Ives, pioneer missionary to the old Southwest. Admitted to parish status in 1838 by the Rt. Rev. Jackson Kemper, Provisional Bishop of Alabama. First rector was the Rev. John Avery, D. D. Present building designed by Mr. Richard Upjohn, renowned American architect and founder of the American Institute of Architects. Erected in 1859 and moved across the Warrior River to its present location in 1878.
