Geocache Description:

The container has temporarily been switched to a black decon container. It is hanging in a tree behind the station. Please BYOP.

Goochland Fire-Rescue was founded in 1951 in Manakin with a privately owned fire truck. The first rescue squad was formed in this location in 1965. Since the James River forms Goochland County's entire southern border, it was important for the department to form a river rescue unit; this was completed in 1978.

Manakin Company 1 is one of six fire-rescue stations located throughout Goochland county. It is staffed by volunteer firefighters and EMS providers. Combining fire and rescue in one organization not only avoids costly duplication of buildings and equipment, but provides the volunteers with the option to be cross-trained in both fire and rescue skills. More than half of Goochland's volunteers can perform in both capacities.

Goochland Fire-Rescue provides 24-hour fire and rescue services to the county from each of its six stations. The officers of the stations are elected by members for administrative functions; and are overseen by the departmental board.

The volunteers receive professional quality training and must meet extensive training standards in order to answer emergency calls. These standards are set by the Virginia Office of EMS and Department of Fire Programs. With the help of these volunteers, the county provides equipment and procedures to deal effectively with a wide range of life-safety crises such as vehicle accidents, structure fires, illness and injury. All services are provided free of charge.

If you see any volunteers at the station, please feel free to offer your thanks for their hard work and dedication. And, bring your kids along so they can look at the engines. The guys love to show off their toys!

Initial contents of the cache include:
smoke alarm & EMS T-shirt (both courtesy of Manakin Co. 1)
Maltese cross emblem
First aid kit
fire/rescue cars
fire engine
...and other related items

Please try to maintain the theme of the cache when trading.

I'm also starting off my new Firefighter Geocoin here. It's goal is to visit as many fire/rescue personnel as possible around the world.

Happy caching!!
