Geocache Description:

A meander (you, not the river) in the Wey valley. Allow up to 2 hours, though it's less than an hour's walk. The new cache is not large enough for swaps (but geocoins would fit). It has certificates for finders, though.

This is a circular(ish) walk around the valley of the River Wey with pleasant views in all seasons (yes - even in winter), enlivened by a few simple puzzles and things to do en route. Remember to bring a pen or pencil! Nothing too complicated. No reference books or Googling needed, just a bit of thinking on your feet. Perfect for a sunny afternoon's stroll. Probably this walk would be quite challenging if you were pushing a baby buggy (though the valiant Honeys managed it), but children of 5 years and upwards should cope reasonably comfortably. I am grateful to the National Trust for granting permission to place this cache.

The coordinates given are not for the cache but for a small parking area just off the A3100 adjacent to Broadwater Lake. A more convenient alternative would be to park at the Manor Inn, a little way down the road towards Godalming. Car park for patrons only, but I guess if you're going to patronise them after your walk ... Pub has a large garden with children's play equipment.

First waypoint is the Start of the Walk. Note the name of the house that needs dusting. How many letters in the name? Answer: C.

Second waypoint is Toad in the Hole. Its coords are N51 11.(C)(C-5)(C) W000 35. 1(C-4)(C+1). On your way there you will turn left at "Pig Corner". You are looking for a micro whose location will be obvious from some distance. Within the micro, you will find the letters missing from the following table and a clue on interpreting the message, which will get you to the third waypoint.

T   O   R   A
  M   E   K   E
W   E   E   R
  N   P   O   D
I   O   N   D
  I   I   P   E
N   N   O   T
  E   I   N   T

Third waypoint is Siamese Trees (a curiously joined pair). Again, you are seeking a micro containing the missing letters from a table, shown below, plus a clue to help you to read a message and get to waypoint 4. At the end of the message, three letters will be left over. They are not part of the puzzle, but are a greeting from me to all female cachers.

M   S   O   T   O
  X   W   T   O
R   V   F   K   O
  F   T   P   T
Z   N   I   E   N
  D   O   T   O
H   E   E   O   N
  T   F   N   D
E   E   D   X   A

Fourth waypoint is Crooked Man. You are looking for a third micro containing a clue to help you decode the following message. You will also discover the value of D (needed to find cache). When the message is decoded, you will be able to find the fifth waypoint (last one before the cache - you're getting close!).

Message:

Q R C L K G M R I H Q D H H M R F Q Q R K

H C L S H L Q B I O R J Q L U Q K X G A S L

L K W C L S H B L D K Q Q F Q B W L Z B V Q

Fifth waypoint is Up the Pole.

What are the two red digits at the top? Call them E and F.

... and the cache is at:

N51 11 . C * F * (D+1)
W000 35 . (D+E) * (D+E) + F - C - C
