Klockan 23:23 den 5 oktober 1944 sågs en tysk ubåt lämna inloppet för Umeälven. Hur den obemärkt lyckats ta sig in i älven är fram till idag ett stort mysterium. Ubåten siktades av den 42 årige fiskaren Edward Nilsson. Efter att ha kontaktat myndigheterna valde denne att på eget initiativ ta upp jakten. I sin fiskebåt följde han den tyske ubåten ut till havs och strax efter midnatt såg han den dyka. Militären hann aldrig ut med fartyg och trots den ubåtsjakt som följde fann man aldrig någon ubåt. En signalspaningsstation lyckades dock strax innan klockan fem på morgonen snappa upp följande meddelande.

Då meddelandets struktur tydde på Kriegsmarine så antog man att Edwards Nilssons historia var sann. Svenska myndigheter valde dock att inte konfrontera Tyskland. Det politiska läget ansågs för spänt och svenska ledningen fruktade att de skulle vara tvungna att bryta sin neutralitetspolitik. Därför tystades händelsen snabbt ner och har varit hemligstämplad fram till denna dag.
Lite ytterligare information har dock framkommit under åren. Den norska säkerhetstjänsten har meddelat att en norsk spion ska ha erkänt i förhör att han skulle hämtat ett paket söder om Umeå den aktuella kvällen och leverera det till Narvik. En leverans som inte blev av då han gripits för fylleri kvällen innan.
Då de tyska krigsarkiven blivit publika vet man att det var U-684, en ubåt av typ VIIC som kränkte svenskt vatten. Man har även lyckats få tillgång till kodboken för oktober 1944.

At 11:23 PM the 5th of October 1944 a German sub was spotted leaving the Umeå River. Until today no one can explain how it could have entered unnoticed. The sub was spotted by the 42 year old fisherman Edward Nilsson. After contacting the authorities he himself started the hunt. In his fishing boat he followed the sub out to sea and saw it dive just after midnight. The navy did not reach the area in time and the sub hunt that followed gave no results. Just before 5 am a listening post picked up the radio message, found above in the Swedish text between the *-lines.
The structure of the message showed that it was from the Kriegsmarine, so the story of Edward Nilsson was thought to be true. The Swedish authorities decided not to confront Nazi Germany. It was thought that it could have led to major political consequences and by this challenging the Swedish neutrality policy. Due to this the event was rated top secret and has been so until today.
During the years since the incident some additional information has appeared. The Norwegian secret service has claimed that a Norwegian spy confessed that he should have picked up a package south of Umeå the night in question and delivered it to Narvik. The package was not received due to the fact that he had been arrested for drunkenness.
Today we know that the sub in question was U-684, a class VIIC sub. We also have the code book for October 1944 (see picture above).
