A small cache placed in sight or close by the pubs name
Built in 1730 it is said to be haunted by a ghost who goes by the name “Owd Sarah”, who was a regular visitor to the Church Inn.
The legend says that every night Owd Sarah would wend her way to the pub for a tankard of ale and take in the gossip of local farmers. One night she was in her usual spot when 2 young men strangers walked in and ordered tankards of ale for themselves instructing the landlord to “gi” “th” “owd woman” a drink. But she declined saying she always bought her own drink, after finishing her drink she re-lit her lantern and set off with the aid of her walking stick. Next morning the old lady was found in a shaft at Birtle Mill. The killers were never found.
Even today people reckon they sometimes hear the “tap tap tap of Owd Sarah’s stick on moonless nights near the pub.
Situated on a public bridleway
