Geocache Description:

This is a multi-cache leading you around some of the more interesting locations and views of Bude town. Please note the co-ordinates given are for the first location of the trail, not the final cache. This cache will involve a gentle stroll of a mile or so and can be done in about an hour.

There are three main car parks for Bude town centre. If you follow the roads towards the first co-ordinates, you will find a car park almost by chance!

You need to collect six digits to give you the co-ordinates of the physical cache which is at:
N50 AB.CDE, W004 FG.HIJ

The first three locations of the trail have a wartime theme:

1. Discover why some people at Clifton College (Bristol) wanted to thank Bude!
Location: N50 49.986 W4 33.198
'A' = the distance to Barnstaple minus the distance to Pentire Point
'B' = the last digit of the distance to Truro plus 'A'
More info about Clifton College here: (visit link)

2. The US 2nd Rangers (The regiment featured in 'Saving Private Ryan) trained at Bude for the D-Day landings. They had been tasked to scale 100ft cliffs at Pointe Du Hoc, four miles west of Omaha beach to destroy a battery of six Howitzers; a feat recognized as one of the most difficult of all D-Day operations. The mission was riddled with errors and when they finally got to the battery, there were no guns there! The cliffs around Bude were perfect to practice on. Find their memorial.
Location: N50 49.769 W4 32.681
'C' = the sum of the last digit of each wartime date
More info about Pointe Du Hoc here: (visit link)

3. The town's War Memorial has quite a commanding position looking over Bude town centre - you can probably see it if you move a few steps east from location 2. Two wars in particular are remembered here.
Location: N50 49.698 W4 32.746
'D' = the sum of the last two digits of the first war start date.

4. Bude's famous inventor is the focus of the next two locations. Find the memorial inspired by one of his inventions.
Location: N50 49.714 W4 32.858
'E' = the sum of the first and last digits of the year the inventor was knighted
'F' = last digit of the year he was born
'G' = the first digit of the number of candles the inventor's creation replaced in the House of Commons.
More info on the inventor here: (visit link)

5. The same inventor experimented with building a building on sand! It is still standing and now houses the town's museum!
Location: N50 49.735 W4 32.924
'H' = the second digit of the year the castle and grounds opened to the public.

6. The final two locations visit the main reason the town of Bude originally developed - the Canal.
Location: N50 49.763 W4 33.094
'I' = the square of the third digit of the year the canal opened
More info on the canal here: (visit link)

7. The original Bude Lifeboat used to launch into the canal. Find its boathouse.
Location: N50 49.585 W4 32.832
'J' = half of the last digit of the telephone number you need to ring if you want to book one of the holiday apartments.
More info on Bude Lifeboat here: (visit link)
