Cache is a 50 cal ammo can for now. The terrain is very steep and the ground is mostly shale. The related web site is a National Staff Ride developed to teach new firefighters about this fire and how the wildland fire culture has changed its pasted practices in order to put firefighter safety first. The staff ride actually starts further up Battlement Creek where T56 crashed into Doghead mountain, the day before this burnover. Pilot Donald Goodman was killed in this accident.
The cache is located at the top of the Battlement Creek Fire, 17th Draw. From this vantage point, the Lookout could see all the activities of those working down in the draw below. On July 17, 1976, the day of the Battlement Creek Fire blow-up, the Lookout was perched up here watching in horror as the flames raced up from below, overtaking 4 of his crew mates. In the end, 3 firefighters were killed and the fourth was severely burned.
This cache is dedicated to all those that still fight wildfires across this country including my youngest son CDB. Always make sure you have your LCES in place prior to committing to any action! And to Stephen, Scott and Tony, you will never be forgotten.

While you’re in the area, be sure and check out some of the other caches in the area.
Congratulations to BioUnit for the FTF :0)
