Geocache Description:

A cache dedicated to Chief Dale Drewery in a cemetery in Harmony, WI.

This geocache, located in the Harmony Cemetery, was dedicated in the memory of Chief Dale Drewery. Chief Drewery served with the Grover-Porterfield Fire Department for 31 years, the last 16 of which as Chief. You would have to say that the fire service is in the Drewery blood, as Dale’s father was an original member of the Department when it started in 1949, then Dale joined the Department in 1970, and Dales son Adam also served on the Department as a Battalion Chief.

Chief Drewery’s commitment to the Fire Department, the fire service, and the community is well known to all. It is a very long list to site all of Chief Drewery’s accomplishments over the years, and he was respected throughout the State of Wisconsin As Chief of the Grover-Porterfield Fire Department, Chief Drewery worked endlessly to provide the very best fire protection to the community. Anytime the call came in day or night Chief Drewery was en route regardless of his own plans or needs, answering the emergency call came first. And with the aid of Department personnel, he brought the Grover-Porterfield Fire Department to be the well-respected department that it is. Chief Drewery was a very motivated and committed advocate for the Fire Service, with a special zeal for the rural departments.

As a member of the Wisconsin Fire Department Advisory Council, Chief Drewery was very instrumental in establishing the DNR Forest Fire Protection Grant program which provides grants to fire departments throughout Wisconsin. Also, the Federal Excess Property program which through the DNR Forestry Division allows fire departments to obtain low cost vehicles for use in wildland fire suppression. In 2000 the Wisconsin State Fire Inspectors Association named Chief Drewery Volunteer Fire Chief of The Year, a much-deserved honor.

Chief Drewery was President of the Marinette County Fire Association for several years, and during that time kept the needs of the Fire Service a number one priority, and was very influential and worked tirelessly to ensure that Marinette County was well prepared for any disaster. If any fire department or Chief needed assistance of information Chief Drewery was always there for them, and would do anything he could to help or find information for them.

His techniques for controlling silo fires is known and used throughout the Midwest, and Chief Drewery would travel at a moments notice to assist with silo fires, and would conduct classes and seminars on fighting silo fires.

Chief Drewery was a Fire Service Instructor for Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, and an advocate for improved fire service training. Constantly pushing for improvements in training for all the Fire Departments in Marinette County. Chief Drewery lead the fund raising effort to build a training facility at NWTC Marinette campus which today consists of a 3 story splash board and a roof ventilation simulator. Chief Drewery was also Chairman of the NWTC Fire Training Advisory Committee. Chief Drewery was also a founding member of the Marinette County Haz-Mat Team; severed on the Local Emergency Planning Committee, and the 911 Users Committee. Chief Drewery was a member of the Wisconsin State Fire Chief’s Association, Wisconsin State Firefighter’s Association, National Fire Protection Association, National Volunteer Fire Council, served as Emergency Fire Warden for 12 years, and was the Chief Fire Inspector for Grover-Porterfield.

In addition to all of this, Chief Drewery held a full time job with the Marinette County Highway Department for 31 years, was a member of the Peshtigo School Board, and still had time to be a husband and father.
