Geocache Description:

We will be meeting on Aug. 2nd at Murphy Park at 10:30 am in the parking area on the north side of the lake for a little meet & greet and a potluck lunch and we'll try to eat around 11:30. Then afterward around noon we'll start a new activity and if you wish to stick around for it and particpate in it, it is up to you, but I don't think you're going to want to miss this. This event will be going on all afternoon so feel free to stop by and sign the logbook and visit with other geocachers and watch some of the cachers try and make it to the island on cardboard boats.

So get set to get wet! Armed with cardboard, duct tape and a few other odds and ends, join us at the first ever geocaching cardboard boat race (I think). I think geocachers have come up with really clever caches containers and had various experience in waterproofing. So let's test those skills learned through the years.

The racing will begin at noonish. You don't have to compete in the race to attend this part of the event but you might just want to stick around to enjoy the "show" and visit with your fellow geocachers. We will have a kids category and an adults category. Also a contest for the most creative boat. There will be raffle for a few prizes for those in attendance.

The kids category will be age 8 to age 18, the adults category will be 18 and up. Were planning on having a couple of boats going along near the contestants. This will be judged on time from the boat dock to the island. If a boat doesn't make it to the island the winners will be judge on distance traveled. The distance from the dock to the island is just under a quarter mile. The average depth of the lake is normally 12 foot deep but is a bit more as of late. There is no current in the lake other than what the wind creates. Racers will be running there race one boat at a time so we can all cheer the contestant on. A stopwatch will be used for timing, and I will have a person camped out on the island with an air horn to signal when the boat has reached the island.

I'll be bring my grill and will be contacting a few others to get some more grills and we'll get some hotdogs and hamburgers going. If you would be able too, please bring a dish with you to help feed us all.

Parking may end up along the road depending on how many people show up. I would like to keep the parking area open for the boats and food tables. If we need to we can drive in and unload the boats in the parking area and then move the vehicles out the road.

Again it all depends on how many can attend.

The judges will remain undisclosed until race day.

But most of all we hope to see ya there!!!

Construction Regulations

1. Any thickness of corrugated cardboard is permitted, but waxed cardboard carpet tubes and barrels are not allowed.

2. Duct tape may be used. Tape may only be used on seams, joints or patches only. DO NOT WRAP THE HULL IN TAPE, PLASTIC, SHRINK WRAP OR ANY OTHER MATERIAL.

3. Caulking may be used, but only on seams and edges.

5. Styrofoam or any other flotation-type foam is a major "no-no." Violators will be branded "Pirates" and stripped of any trophies or prizes.

6. No restriction is placed on decorative materials, as long as they do not aid in the flotation or propulsion of the boat and do not create a fire or safety hazard.

7. A canoe paddle or boat ores will be allowed to use to help you float along to the island.

8. All boats must display the assigned entry number on a vertical surface of the boat. The number must be at least 6-inches tall. This will be done by the judges.

4. Consumption of alcoholic beverages or other substances that might impair a participant's judgment will not be permitted before or during the race.

Also the boats are the owners responsablity to dispose of. We WILL NOT leave them there. I can help with the dumpster at my office, but that can only hold so much.

Disclaimer= Anyone participating in the cardboard boat racing portion of the event is doing so at their own risk. We will have a couple of real boats out in the lake to get assist anyone trying back to shore if you boat sinks.
