Geocache Description:

Mt Abrupt sticks out of the Heysen Range just north of Wilpena Pound and provides superb views of the ranges and out to Lake Torrens.

This cache is not a drive-by, it is for the serious outdoor enthusiast. Climbing Mt Abrupt is not trivial - do not be deceived by the 4.5 star terrain rating - I have only rated it thus so I have room to accommodate more difficult caches in future.

I set the cache with a party of Scouts - we approached from the east and used ropes to protect some of the climbs/descents - it is quite exposed. Approaching from the east is FIVE STAR TERRAIN due to climbing and exposure.

Approaching from the west is the easier route (and the one to which the terrain rating applies.) Although I have not approached from this direction, I know that it does not require serious climbing.

Do not even think about attempting the cache when it is wet as the rock will be extremely slippery, nor when it is hot - it is a 450m climb from the east and a 600m climb from the west. Cache is achievable in a big day's walk from the east or the west, but I recommend bringing your tent, fuel stove, food etc. and making a trip of it.

The cache is in the Flinders Ranges National Park so you should tell them where you're going. Park entry fees apply.

Edeowie Station (to the west) allows people to cross their property to visit Edeowie Gorge - probably best to either ring ahead or drop in at the homestead on your way though.

There may be water available at the bottom of Kanalla Falls in Edeowie Gorge. The gorge is very spectacular and a visit is recommended if you're in the area.

There are a couple of small campsites on saddles to the south of the cache, should you require them. (Small one at approx. 647 155, slightly larger one at approx. 645 151.)

You are looking for an ammo box containing a few lightweight swaps (the ammo box certainly wasn't lightweight!)

Good luck!
