Wegbeschreibung
Verläßt man Agios Mattheos nach Süden Richtung Mesongi, so muß man etwa nach einem Kilometer nach Ende der Ortschaft rechts abbiegen. Nach 800 m geht es links weiter, dort sind auf der rechten Seite schon die Mauern des Kastells. Hier ist auch der Eingang. |

Leaving Agios Mattheos to the south turn right after about 1 km. After another 800 m turn left and you will already see the walls of the fortress. The entrance is right here. |
Das Kastell...
...wurde Anfang des 13. Jahrhunderts von Michael I. Palaiologos gegründet. Es hat einen polygonalen Grundriß. Die Mauern sind erstaunlich gut erhalten. Ursprünglich gab es acht Türme, sechs sind noch mehr oder weniger gut erhalten. Da das Kastell nicht auf einem schwer einnehmbaren, erhöhten Ort liegt (wie zum Beispiel Angelokastro bei Paleokastritsa), vermutet man, daß es etwas in der Umgebung schützen sollte. Vielleicht sind es die zahlreichen Quellen, die noch heute den Bauern in der Umgebung Wasser spenden.

The Fortress...
...was founded by Michael I. Palaiologos in early 13th century. The ground view ist polygonal. The walls are in an astonishing good condition. Originally there were eight towers, six of them are in an more or less good condition. Usually fortresses are situated on high, steep places being difficult to be assaulted like Angelokastro nearby Paleokastritsa. This fortress is not placed like that so one could think it has been built to protect someting in the surrounding. Maybe these are the numerous springs that still provide this region with water. |
In dem Turm südlich des heutigen Eingangs befand sich möglicherweise eine Burgkapelle. Vor etwa dreißig Jahren konnten in dem Obergeschoß noch Freskenfragmente erahnt werden. Innerhalb der Kastellmauern kann nur noch an zwei Stellen vermutet werden, daß es etwas wie Bebauung gegeben hat: eine niedrige Mauer und der Grundriß, möglicherweise eines runden Raumes, sind erkennbar.

In the tower south of the entrance there seems to have been a chapel. About thirty years ago one could see last parts of frescos on the upper floor. Inside the fortress there are only two places showing some remaining parts of buildings: a low wall and a kind of a round room.

Es gibt zwei Tavernen hier. An der einen seid Ihr schon vobeigekommen, die andere liegt auch an der Straße, ein paar Meter weiter nach Süden. Es sah dort unter den schattenspendenden Bäumen sehr gemütlich aus. |

There are two taverns around. The first you have already seen. The second one is placed a few meters south of the fortress. It seems to be quite cosy unter the shady trees. |
Noch nicht genug?
Eine Höhle besichtigen könnt Ihr ganz in der Nähe (inzwischen liegt dort auch ein Earthcache: GC32G8K). Fahrt dazu die paar Meter zu der letzten Kreuzung zurück und biegt links ab. Nach ein paar hundert Metern steht rechts am Straßenrand ein Hinweisschild (Waypoint CAVE). Parken müßt Ihr am Straßenrand.
Etwas weiter hinter dem Schild ist ein Tor zu sehen. Der Weg zu der Grawia-Höhle führt direkt rechts vom Tor in den Olivenhain und dort über mehrere Ebenen hinauf. Zunächst haben wir noch kleine, braune Schilder mit Pfeil gefunden, doch später waren dort keine mehr. Am besten geht man in etwa der bisherigen Richtung den Hang weiter hinauf.

You can have a look at an old cave nearby (there is an earthcache meanwhile: GC32G8K). Drive back to the last junction and turn left. After some hundred meters there's a sign on the right side of the road (waypoint CAVE). Park at the roadside.
Behind the information board there's a fenced area. The way to the Gravia-cave begins on the right hand of it. At first you can follow the brown and yellow arrows. The way leads through an olive grove, a bit uphill. Later there are no signs any more so keep going uphill into that direction and you will find the cave. |

| Während der letzten Eiszeit war Korfu mit dem Festland verbunden. Damals wanderten die Höhlenbewohner auf die heutige Insel. Hier, in dieser Höhle, ließen sie sich nieder, und hier wurden die ältesten (20.000 Jahre vor Christus) menschlichen Spuren der Insel Korfu gefunden. |
Korfu was connected to the continent during the last ice age. At that time the cavemen came to this island. This is the very cave in which they settled down and dwelt in. And here one found the eldest (20.000 years B.C.) things humans have used on this island.

| Baden könnt ihr auch ganz in der Nähe: Folgt der Straße weiter nach Süden. Nach etwa drei Kilometern erreicht Ihr die Taverne Nikolis. Sie liegt am nördlichen Rand der Korrision-Lagune mit einer sehr interessanten Vogelwelt. Zwischen der Lagune und dem Meer führt ein gut befahrbarer Sandweg an den Dünen vorbei, wo man jederzeit parken kann. Jenseits der Dünen liegt ein wenig besuchter Sandstrand. |
You can go for a swim nearby, too: follow the road southwards. About 3 km later you will arrive at a tavern called Nikolis. It is situated on the northern bank of lake Korission with its interesting bird life. There's a drivable sand road between the lake and the sea. Parking somewhere at the roadside and going across the dunes you will reach a sandy beach which is by no means as overcrowdwed as other beaches. |
