Pit Stop On The Road From Almonte Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

alseaman: After due consideration, and some fruitless searching for a better location, I think it is time to archive this cache. It has been muggled twice in its history, both times around hunting season, presumably by deer hunters. I am still hoping to find a good location closer to the road, and further from hunters, but there is a limit to how close to the road it can be placed since there is a way-point in a puzzle cache fairly close to the other side of the road. If a good location for a smaller cache can be found a new cache will be placed. In the meantime, this one is unfortunately out of business. Too bad - aside from the muggles it had a good run.
Cheers - alseaman

Geocache Description:

A short walk (250 metres) down a bush trail off CR49 (March Road) near the exit of Highway 417. May be puddles and wet spots depending on the weather, and in the spring. The immediate area of the cache is high and dry.

Since moving to Almonte over 40 years ago, I have passed this area on the road from Almonte a gazillion times without ever exploring it. Since becoming a geocacher almost a year ago, it has occurred to me that this is a spot that really needs a cache. So here it is, my first cache.

It is recommended that you park on the south side of March Road (N 45 18.564 W076 03.739) where the trail meets the road. The shoulder is wide and ample room to park. There is an unused, and blocked, concession road on the north side of March Road that is in line with the trail on the south side. You can also park there.

Although the trail is used by 4 wheel drive vehicles, it is definitely not recommended for your average family car. Walk in - the distance is relatively short (250 metres), and easy to walk.

The area is very popular with deer hunters during the deer hunt season, and it is recommended that you not look for the cache during that season. If you insist on going then, wear suitable orange blaze outer cothing. The rest of the year it is pretty much isolated and free of muggles.

The cache container is a camo'd ammo box. The contents include the usual cache swag

This is a replacement for the original cache that was stolen by muggles (presumably deer hunters). It has been moved to a new hide a short distance from the original. It should be more secure, but not necessarily available in all winter conditions. Please replace the container in its hide with appropriate cover.
