Geocache Description:

Fairly flat terrain less then 50' off Hwy 34. Park on the roadside. Cache is hidden by natural vegitation. Easy walk but not wheelchair accessible. Should be reachable at all the highest of tides.

When Waldport was young and the mills and canneries were all running, the towns railroad ran right through this spot. Originally there was a cedar shingle mill here that later became the Mill Tavern. When the railroad was shut gown in the late 30's highway 34 was re-alligned and the old trestles were removed.
If you look to the west, you can still see some of the remaining rail trestles. There are even a few very small ones just a few feet in front of you near the road. These are remnats of the logging railway that was constructed by the United States Army during WWI. They used it to log spruce all around Lincoln County for use in aircraft construction during the war. When the war was over the railway was purchsed by the CD Johnson Lumber Company and was used for years to move raw logs and finished lumber and other products to and from the area.
With the completion of highway 101 and it's bridges the railway was eventually abandoned.
The hill directly above the cache was homesteaded by my great-grandparents, Cliff and Bessie Buker. It was known as Buker Hill for decades.
I included some historical photos of Waldport in the cache . The photo captioned "A glimpse of Waldport" shows the original Hwy 34 bridge at Lint Slough. It as taken from an area just above this cache. That bridge started at current day Mill St. and cut directly through the mobile home park that you now see across the water from you.
The other photos are various views of Waldport from 1909 through 1936. One shows the original Hwy 101 bridge near the end of it's construction. In the background to the upper right you can see the railroad trestle as it crosses the bay and heads towards TOLEDO. The right edge of the photo is approximately where the cache is located.
