Geocache Description:

Every time June comes around and I drive through the farm country of the Fraser Valley I am reminded of all those teenage summers that I picked berries. It’s amazing how a job I loathed has left me with so many good memories… the sweet smell of strawberries, lunch time in the shade, great friendships made, sharing the shady side of the raspberry row and buying my first shiny ten speed with every cent of my hard earned money.

This cache series is dedicated to all of you who picked berries like me. I hope it brings back some wonderful memories for you too. When you find the cache make sure to make note of the Jumble Letter(s) located inside the cache. You will need them to solve the puzzle for the Final: I’m Done Picking Berries.

Oh my aching back! That’s my first thought when I think about all those hours of picking STRAWBERRIES. And there never was ever any relief from the sun. But when the peak season hit, and those berries were so huge, I could pick a flat in 20 minutes. My record was 15 flats in one day. I don’t know why I remember that but I do. There’s something about the smell of strawberries and eating them, sun-warmed, straight off the vine. Across the street from the cache site you’ll be able to just go in and buy a flat, a lot easier than picking them, that’s for sure. Once you get that flat home try this recipe for Strawberry/Rhubarb Crisp….it’s our family’s favourite.

STRAWBERRY/RHUBARB CRISP
4 cups cut-up strawberries and rhubarb – mixed
¾ cup packed brown sugar
½ cup all purpose flour
½ cup quick-cooking or old-fashioned oats
1/3 cup margarine or butter, softened
¾ tsp ground cinnamon
¾ tsp ground nutmeg
1. Heat oven to 375 degrees. Grease bottom and sides of 8x8 square pan.
2. Pour rhubarb and strawberries into pan. Mix remaining ingredients. Sprinkle over fruit.
3. Bake about 30 minutes or until topping is golden brown and fruit is tender. Serve warm and, if desired, with cream or ice cream.
