Geocache Description:

2 mile kayaking voyage on the Columbia Slough. We've just re-done all the waypoints so everything is easy and clear. Don't know whether to call it "easy" or "difficult." Waypoints aren't hard, but everything is impossibly difficult without a kayak!

This is a multi-stage 2 mile kayaking voyage on the Columbia Slough, starting at County Drainage District office, at the levee (1880 NE Elrod), heading east, and ending at the Whitaker Ponds (7040 NE 47th). If you have two vehicles, you can leave one at Whitaker. Or, if you want to continue, you can return by following “What’s up Dock?” which starts near the ending point of "Paddle to Cache” and returns to the levee! Bring your camera for photos of wildlife!

You can put your kayak in at the launch at County Drainage District Office. From NE 33rd, turn West at Elrod Drive, where the country club is. Drive to the very end of Elrod, and you’ll see a parking lot labeled “Kayak Parking.” Drag your kayaks down the path on on the LEFT side of the building and put in at the dock. Paddle to the coordinates above; you will find a new set of coordinates. There will be a total of three on the slough, and the third one will send you to the actual cache on land at the Whitaker Pond Park. You do not need to get out of your kayaks until you dock at the end.

The first waypoint (the initial listing) is currently surrounded by debris and hard to paddle to. So we'll temporarily provide it here. It says, go to: N.45º 34.646/W. 122º 37.584

“Portage” near the levee: There’s a floating orange gate that is sometimes latched and sometimes not. If it’s latched, you should re-latch it. It’s canoe-friendly, but not so kayak-friendly. It’s tricky (but possible) for one person to do it: There are two latches, one on each end of the gate. You have to unlatch one, go through the gate, unlatch the second, return back through the gate to re-latch the first one. Go through the gate again and re-latch the second one.

Hope you enjoy this combination of our two favorite hobbies! Please replace the final cache carefully.

Also, blackberries grow like crazy around here--they weren't a problem when we placed the waypoints and final cache, but in a year or two, who knows? Feel free to bring clippers. Blackberries are an invasive species and don't feel bad if you have to cut them away.

On your way to #3, you'll come to a Y in the slough and take the left of the Y. To find the final cache, you'll have to backtrack to the intersection and take the right fork of the Y.

NOTE: When updating the cache in May 2011, we moved the final cache a tiny bit. So the coordinates at #3 which lead to the final cache need to be changed. The N. coordinates should end in 46. The W. coordinates end in 45.
